Mom Makes the Team

Everyone has seen or heard that mom, the overly enthusiastic parent at kids’ sporting events. This mom, though, takes the cake! (She bakes cookies too!) She should get a blue ribbon for her zeal. However, will Mom’s overboard exuberance be a hit with her son’s coaches, or will it cause her to strike out?

Cockleshell Cackles

It’s time for a good laugh! Cultivating silliness and creativity is excellent for everyone, so dig into Cockleshell Cackles, a poetry collection filled with humor, real-life experiences, and nursery rhyme goofiness.

In the first section, “Garden of Giggles,” author Mary Don Beachy has planted poems based on life experiences relatable to any child, like snoring relatives, sports mistakes, and dealing with a younger sibling. In the second section, “Contrary Nursery Rhymes,” familiar nursery rhymes have been uprooted and trampled on a bit to make them modern and even more fun.

Finally, in section three, “Budding Poet Workspace,” poems have beginnings, but the endings are up to you. Get ready to laugh, learn, and embrace your inner artist in a collection that is sure to please both parents and children alike.

This is a really fun book about an all-too-familiar and therefore hilarious mom who (re- ?) defines “helicopter parenting” — and there are even hidden helicopters in the funny illustrations. If you have witnessed, know, or ARE one of these “involved” parents, you’ll relate to the mom’s intense love for her child manifesting as vicarious victory-seeking. Definitely as much fun for parents to read as it is for elementary-age children.
JRelatable, funny, & charming!

If you've ever tried to press on invisible breaks in the passenger seat of a parent's car, mouthed the words to a speech as a nervous loved one delivers it, or cringed in pain when a pal gets clobbered, you know the aching, sometimes funny, undeniable truth of vicarious love. This book zeroes in on the experience of motherhood for those with a heart and hopes too big to fit inside their bodies. The titular "Mom" grapples with extricating herself from her son's efforts and let him try, succeed, fail, and explore on his own -- but she does so to relatable and hilarious effect. For any parent struggling to "let go" while also attempting to will the universe into the shape that most benefits your child, or for any child whose parents might seem a bit over-exuberant at times, this will provide some laughs and some good fodder for meaningful discussion about what love is and how we (both parents and children!) can best simultaneously support and accept one another for who we are.

Official Review: Mom Makes the Team by Mary Don Beachy
Read More
Mom Makes the Team, by Mary Don Beachy, is a children’s book about a young boy who participates in a variety of different sports. Although the boy is the one actually playing the sports, his mother is just as involved. With lots of advice for her little sports star and an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm, the boy’s mom may as well be part of the team! Will the little boy be able to succeed in his activities and live up to his mother’s high standards?

The story found in this book is engaging and sweet. In Mom Makes the Team, the unnamed protagonist is a young boy with an overzealous mother. The protagonist tries his hand at all sorts of different sports, but he never seems to live up to his mother’s high expectations, no matter how much extra “coaching” she gives him. Despite this, the book exudes strong messages about the importance of family and accepting people for who they are.

Although the story is enjoyable, the best aspect of this children’s book is the artwork. Sold as a hardcover book, Mom Makes the Team is filled with vibrant, full-page illustrations that highlight important parts of the story. The characters depicted are animated and have emotive facial expressions and mannerisms that are easy to interpret. These illustrations are sure to resonate with the intended audience. Further, the illustrations include a lot of details that will help hold the attention of young readers.

Despite the many positive aspects of this children’s book, there are a few areas that could be improved. The message about accepting family members for who they are comes a little late in the book; for a while, it is hard to understand why Mom is so overbearing and inconsiderate of her son’s feelings. Further, the narrative is a bit long-winded, making it difficult to determine the target audience for this book. Very young readers will probably have a difficult time following the lengthy narrative on each page, and the story might be too immature for older readers.

With the exception of some minor flaws, the presentation of this children’s book is top-notch: the full-page illustrations are cohesive and professional, the messages in the story are heartwarming, and the editing is perfect. The positive aspects lead me to rate Mom Makes the Team 4 out of 4 stars. This is a great book for young kids who are participating in group activities to read with their caregivers; the book might even help children and caregivers better understand one another. Because the narrative is long-winded, I recommend this book for readers between the ages of six and ten; children in this age range will likely have the most in common with the protagonist as well as the appropriate attention span to enjoy this story.

"The book scores points for a long list of kitchen guidelines and instructions on measuring, also for not slipping into pat, obnoxious “cutesy” recipes with fairytale names and calling for ingredients like marshmallow whip and grape jelly. It is a good primer: easy-to-understand, clearly designed and filled with relatively cosmopolitan dishes.”

“The original 2.000 copies sold in less than three months. A second larger printing will soon be available. The authors say their book has inspired new parent-child relationships in the kitchen. The cookbook includes recipes for such delights as Cowboy Coffee Cake, Queen of Hearts Cherry-Chocolate Cake, Ballerina Nectar and —especially tasty at Halloween—Spooketti and Eyeball Salad."
